My darling first graders were in for a special treat this lesson with a special activity to complete. Many students knew the names of fruit when they saw the visual pictures but they also learned what “How many are there?” really means. They would see a picture of a different amount of fruit and would be asked the question “How many are there” Then the word I used was “Let’s count” so they knew to count the fruit they saw. They would respond with the number followed by the name of the fruit. For example, “four oranges” The really fun part of this lesson was when they were introduced to a famous American author by the name of Eric Carle of the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” The interesting part was the students watched a mini video of an animated story of a very hungry caterpillar who eats everything he sees. Much of what he ate was all different types of fruit but he also ate other goodies such as chocolate cake, a cupcake, a lollipop, a cherry pie and loads of other things. Then the students colored their own hungry caterpillar and fed him different types of food. They also wrote a descriptive sentence about the caterpillar on their worksheet by writing “He is hungry.” I would like to share some advice with different ways to promote English learning at home. It is important for students to complete their homework because this will reinforce what students learned in class. Parents can ask students what they learned in their English class but students should respond in English. As long as they can produce some English words would be a great start. Using English daily even if it is just for 5 minutes is a great start to using English language naturally and as time progresses the time should increase. I incorporate many English videos and songs in class. I will provide the same videos I use to you so students can review and practice at home. I will also provide vocabulary with pictures for students to remember at home. I am excited to see the progress that will develop in class. |
