Second Graders

The lesson second grade learned was quite interesting. They learned different parts of a playground and they also learned common language that native English speakers would use with their friends on the playground. I focused the lesson primarily on intonation, fluency and prosody. Mastering this part of English language would help aid non-native English speakers to speak as natives. For example, they read sentences such as” This is really fun!” “Can you play with me?” “Where is the slide?” and etc. As you can see these sentences do not end with a period but rather with an end mark that requires you to change the pitch of your voice. A great way I had students practice using common English language used at a playground was for them to work in small groups of four by playing a board game. They would roll the dice and move the number of spaces required and would read the sentence aloud. If a student had trouble reading the sentence, other students would help with pronunciation. The first student to reach to the finish line won the game!     I would like to share some advice with different ways to promote English learning at home. It is important for students to complete their homework because this will reinforce what students learned in class. Parents can ask students what they learned in their English class but students should respond in English. As long as they can produce some English words would be a great start. Using English daily even if it is just for 5 minutes is a great start to using English language naturally and as time progresses the time should increase. I incorporate many English videos and songs in class. I will provide the same videos I use to you so students can review and practice at home. I will also provide vocabulary with pictures for students to remember at home. I am excited to see the progress that will develop in class.
